Cam Penner & the Gravel Road - Get Up
Stylus Magazine (University of Winnipeg), Broose Tulloch
Get Up, the follow up to 2002's "Drive," is a jewel case full of grit and gravel. Cam Penner is developing into quite songwriter, evolving into a true story teller, in the same vein as Ian Tyson or Tommy Hunter. What Corb Lund is to rural Alberta and cowboys, cam penner is to rural blue collar Manitoba. What the gravel road dust cloud settles, you'll notice a subte funk groove to the songs, a very nice touch! It's the down home vocals, poetic delivery and music that turn these dozen stories into songs. Good country music like this is making comeback as more artists self-release albums rather then playing Nashville's corporate game. At the end of a hard working day (I mean real work), "Get Up" is the perfect jukebox selection to accompany that cold beer!
